Hello, this is attorney Steven Biggie and I’m going to talk to you today about what documents you should bring to an immigration consultation with your immigration lawyer. Really depends on what step of the process you’re in. Obviously, if you’re at the very end of the process, if you’re in the removal proceedings or deportation proceedings, the most important document you need to bring is your NTA, which is a notice to appear. and that typically will lay
out the government’s allegations against

you. Uh, and there are allegations as to why you are removable from the United States. If you are going through an administrative process, you’re filing for a visa or a green card, then the best thing for you to do is to bring a copy or your passport to the consultation. The passport contains stamps when you entered the country which includes what type of visa you use to enter when you entered and that particular information is going to be important to an immigration attorney to determine what type of uh forms you need
01:04
to file in order to get the immigration relief you are seeking. If you went the DIY route and you have questions about the status of your case or you have uh received a request for evidence and it’s really important that you bring your I797 notice of action. That’s a form the government mails to you typically after you submit your applications. It contains a receipt number on it and that receipt number is very important to look up your case status and to calculate the processing time that your case has.
01:33
Obviously, if you receive a request for evidence from immigration and they need more information in order to uh finish processing your applications, then you need to bring that request for evidence so you’re I or an immigration attorney that you’re seeing can determine exactly uh what the government is looking for. And finally, if you get a decision and you want to appeal that decision or you’re unhappy with the decision from immigration, then you need to actually bring that uh physical piece of paper.
02:00
It states the government’s reasons for denying your application and then an attorney or myself can review and figure out whether it’s something uh that can be fixed through a motion to reopen or a motion to reconsider or if it’s something that you might need to start the whole process over again due to too many mistakes. Uh and then finally, if you’re kind of going down the citizenship route or you’re going down the citizenship route, then you should bring a copy of your green card to your
02:26
consultation. Those are typically the most important documents that an immigration attorney would need to review to determine uh what type of relief you need in order to fix any issues you may have or answer any questions you may have. So, just to kind of recap, your passport, green card if you got one, your I797 notice of action, notice to appear if you received one of those, a decision from immigration if you got a denial on your applications, or if they’re requesting more evidence, then you should bring a request for
02:55
evidence so we can really dig into what exactly uh you need in order to get the uh relief from immigration you are seeking.
